~Book Review: The Girl From The Well~

The Girl From The Well
Rin Chupeoc
Expectied Publication Date:  August 5, 2014

You may think me biased, being murdered myself. But my state of being has nothing to do with the curiosity toward my own species, if we can be called such. We do not go gentle, as your poet encourages, into that good night.

A dead girl walks the streets.

She hunts murderers. Child killers, much like the man who threw her body down a well three hundred years ago.

And when a strange boy bearing stranger tattoos moves into the neighborhood so, she discovers, does something else. And soon both will be drawn into the world of eerie doll rituals and dark Shinto exorcisms that will take them from American suburbia to the remote valleys and shrines of Aomori, Japan.

Because the boy has a terrifying secret - one that would just kill to get out.

The Girl from the Well is A YA Horror novel pitched as "Dexter" meets "The Grudge", based on a well-loved Japanese ghost story.

I am where the dead children go.

Okiku has roamed the earth for hundreds of years.  Extracting vengeance on those who deserve it,  she hunts down and murders child killers.  When she notices a new boy named Tark, she wonders about his strange tattoos that he keeps covered up and there may be something attached to him that is not quite human.  His mother is in an asylum for trying to kill him.  Her untimely death takes Tark, his father and his cousin Callie on a journey to Japan to fulfill one of her last wishes.  What he discovers there is not only terrifying but could harm him and the people that he loves as well.

I have always liked scary movies.  I have watched The Ring and The Grudge and they scared me to death! The beginning of this book is amazing.  It starts out quickly and never holds back.  I love the characters of Tark and Callie, who are the only ones who can see the "ghost".  This book has it all.  It is scary with ghosts, exorcisms and plenty of gore.

It is hard for me to review this book even though I enjoyed it very much.  It is a wonderful horror story set to Japanese culture, which I do not know a lot about.  A very unique and intriguing story that will keep your attention until the last page.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for a fair and honest review.  This in no way influenced my review of this book.
